Argyle

Argyle is an unincorporated community in Walton County, Florida, located on U.S. Route 90, 4.2 miles east of DeFuniak Springs.  Its pos office has been in operation since 1883.  The $65 promissory note, shown below, was to the Wrought Iron Range Company, St. Louis, Missouri, fro the balance due on the purchase of a wood-burning wrought iron stove.  These stoves, made primarily from cast iron, were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were commonly used for cooking and home heating.  The fact that these were printed $65 notes indicates they were used on a regular basis for the purpose of selling these stoves.  More than one of these is known to exist, which lends itself as a form of money.
